The NYC Uniform: How to stay slaying in all black
If you’ve lived in New York city long enough, you know that New York is really the city of eternal black. Black buildings, black cars, black street slush, black cigarette black clouds, black skies. And of course, black outfits. Does it get boring on occasions? Honestly? Yes. But that’s because black is so easy to wear that everyone has become numb to its power. It’s become too easy for the daily new yorker to wear a black top, black jeans, and black boots, that it stopped making us look like a schnack and instead like a overripe prune. (nothing against prunes, but just like, everything against prunes) But, we, are going to revive that flavor, and make our prunes into smoothies. (Bad analogy? Probably. But let’s move past that)
We’re bringing back black.
Number One. Texture!
Clothing comes in all textures, whether it be some sort of ribbed material, (like leather) a sheek material, (like silk) or something fluffy (like fur) With black, you can always mix and match. Since you don’t have to worry about color combinations, you can piece together leather, lace, and vinyl all in the same look if you wanted. But be careful. Just because you are opting for an all black outfit doesn’t mean you can throw on all your fancy pieces into one mess. If you want to coordinate textures, (this goes for non black outfits too) find certain pieces that tie in the other elements of your look. This can be a particular top, or a certain shoe that might include two or more of the elements that you are trying to mix. But, more importantly, experiment. What works for one look could be entirely different for another. The truth is, you won’t know until you see it on your body.
Accessorize
Sometimes we all get too caught up in our main pieces, that we forget the importance to accessorize. The thing is, black is so easy to accessorize. A black outfit goes with almost every single accessory imaginable. Whether it be a statement onyx necklace or fishnet stockings u, a simple accessory moment can spruce up what might seem like a pedestrian look. THat same black top, black jeans, and a black shoe with a black wide-brimmed hat, puts you a step above all the others.
Get creative with sizing and cuts
With all black outfits, you have the option to wear a cropped pant with a bootie, or a bell bottom with that same pair of shoes. Try to wear something oversized paired with something tight and form fitting. Something like an oversized sweater as a dress, and a pair of tights is a simple but easy way to exercise this tip.
Layer (all these techniques together)
It’s winter now, and let’s be real, everyone is wearing a black coat in New York City. But not everyone can style that puffer coat like you. When you’re layering black for the cold or even the warmth, utilize the prior tips. Mix textures, but also mix cuts and accessories. Wearing those fishnet stockings under a pair of ripped jeans with a lace crop top under a floor length fur leather coat could be the new in.
After all, black is still the new black.
And last but definitely not least, I know this is not exactly the theme of this article but I would be wrong to write something about black without mentioning the fact that you really should
BONUS TIP!!! COLOR POP
After all, black does go with like, basically every single color imaginable. So throw in that hot pink heel, that bright orange skirt, or that green earring that doesn’t ever get a moment in the limelight (pun very much intended) because you finally can. Because after all, with fashion, you should have fun! Remember, set your own trends. If it looks good to you and you feel comfortable and confident, rock it. Make sure you own the outfit and the outfit doesn’t own you. If you feel that you look good in what you’re wearing, chances are, most people will acknowledge it too.
